All About Yankees Uniforms

Meta Description: Here are reasons behind the simplicity of Yankees uniforms.

Yankees uniforms have never changed and part of the reason was tradition. The material used has changed as better fabrics have become available, but the design has not. Even today, the pinstripes are actually woven into the fabric, not printed as they are for every other team using pinstripes.

There are many people, who are not baseball fans, who have commented on the elegance and simplicity of the uniforms. IMO, theirs is among a handful of particularly nice-looking uniforms, and they are all more traditional in style. The Dodgers, Tigers, etc. The teams that have attempted to be trendy, have all needed to change their uniform styles many, many times. Yankees fans also take pride in identifying not only current players but all historic players by their number.

Back in the first half of the 20th Century, it was not even a consideration to put player names on the backs of jerseys in any sport. It implied individuality when a team member should be a team member. The Yankees have always continued this tradition. When you put on the Pinstripes, you are a Yankee, period.

Some Yankee traditions have been relaxed over the years. For a long time, players were required to wear business attire when traveling as a team.

Facial hair is not allowed except for groomed mustaches. Hair longer than the bottom of the collar is not allowed. Visible piercings are not allowed.

Conservative tradition is a part of the Yankee brand. When George Steinbrenner bought the team, he understood this as a businessman, and he reinstated many of the traditional requirements of the team.

Steinbrenner also spent a great deal of money ensuring that player facilities were always the finest possible. Steinbrenner was a firm believer that his players should feel exceptional and professional at all times. The thinking being that being part of a team so obviously uncommon would make the players feel uncommon and exceptional and impart a desire to perform at a higher level than everyone else. He wanted players to feel pride in being part of a team like the Yankees.

While the team had enjoyed great success through most of the 1st half of the 20th Century, the Yankees were a sub-par team through the late 60s and early 70s under the ownership of CBS. The last of the Yankee superstars, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle had retired. Get the best quality joe Dimaggio jerseys.

Steinbrenner purchased the team from CBS for 8.8 million dollars. The brand is currently valued at nearly $4 billion. They have also won 7 more championships in that stretch and either developed or otherwise brought in multiple halls of fame caliber superstars. They are considered to be one of the premier brands in all sports, selling more uniforms and merchandise than any other team. Fans can purchase uniforms with players' names on them, but the most valuable continue to be in the traditional, professional style of number only. Those of historic Yankee greats, in particular, are held in high regard.
