Past head of the national body of Australian Anthropologists and past President and Vice-President of the West Australian Anthropology Society. Senior lecturer in Social Anthropology from 1972 until 1989.

Teaching experience from 1966: English as a foreign language private lessons, adult education, liberal studies, social and cultural anthropology, media and video production. Wide experience as a teacher in a variety of contexts and in University Administration. He was a popular teacher.

Over 40 years original fieldwork in Oxford, Greece, Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Fiji, Brazil and Australia. Dr Machin has also carried out work in organisational analysis and conflict resolution.

Dr. Machin is an expert in Mediterranean studies, visual anthropology and ethnographic film production, research methods and theory, Mediterranean studies, socio-linguistics and comparative education, religion and ritual in Sri Lanka and India, cultural codes and the socialisation of children, and Indigenous Heritage.

Dr Machin has instigated and supervised many research projects. Dr Machin also worked extensively on indigenous issues in Brazil, at the Museum.

Projects have included:

He has carried out major research in educational aspirations and socio-linguistics in Oxford, cultural codes, gender, religion and child-rearing in Greece with pioneering publications and films in this area. He has also carried out research with Greek people in Melbourne. He studied traditional medicine and religion in Sri Lanka, with major awards for his work in this region. He has filmed extensively in India and Brazil.
Dr Machin has produced a substantial body of educational materials and has been recognised internationally for his contributions in this area.
Social research consultancy with Government bodies, mining companies and with many Indigenous organisations and peoples in: the Pilbara, Geraldton, the Goldfields and all over the south west of Western Australia and in other parts of the world.

1988 Anthropos-Omega award in association with the Festival dei Popoli. Other recipients were Jean Rouch, Claudine de France and Karl Heider.
